Fillings are of three types. 1) amalgam fillings 2) composite fillings 3) gic fillings.
Amalgam fillings are silver coloured fillings which are having high strength but are not used now a day as they are not esthetic.
Composite and gic fillings are commonly and mostly used these days.
If decay reaches third chamber root canal treatment should be done.
In root canal treatment entire pulpal chamber will be removed.
Pulpla chamber contains nerve and blood supply to that particular tooth.
once the pulpal chamber is removed tooth will be filled up wiyh artificial filling material called gutta-percha.
Root canal treatment can be done in single and multiple sittings depending on infection.
Root canal treatment will be done under local anesthesia.
If the infection is severe apart from root canal treatment additional procedure called apicectomy should also be performed.
In apicectomy procedure part of root and surrounding periapical infection will be removed.
If tooth is having very poor prognosisand beyond even apicectmy cannot be done.the tooth should be extracted and should be replaced.
