Cleft Lip And Clift Palates: are face and mouth deformities that occur when the baby is still developing inside mother, it results when the facial structures which are still forming do not fuse together.

They are some of the most common birth defects, and can occur as an isolated defect; or can be due to genetic abnormality or associated with any syndrome.

A cleft lip can be present as a notch on the lip or can be as severe as large opening from lip to nose; it might involve one or both sides of lip. A cleft palate is a split in roof of mouth; it might leave an opening through nose, can involve one or both the sides of palate, it can go from the front portion of the mouth to throat.

Cleft lip and palate can occur together in some cases.

Difficulty in eating and swallowing with potential for liquids and food to come out through nose, chronic ear infections, speech problems, dental problems are some of the complications associated with cleft lip and cleft palate.
