OPERCULECTOMY
Operculectomy is a procedure to remove gum tissue or operculum which is partially covering any tooth.
It is generally done in wisdom tooth cases, where tooth is partially erupted; the gum overlying wisdom tooth will have swelling, a condition called pericoronitis.
As it is difficult to clean and maintain proper oral hygiene, the food gets lodged between gums and teeth, causing bacterial accumulation, swelling and inflammation of gums.
When wisdom tooth is completely erupted in the oral cavity, and only gum tissue is partially covering the tooth, operculectomy can be done, furthermore if the third molar is impacted your dentist will advice its extraction to prevent future inconvenience .
If left untreated, you can have food and plaque accumulation, foul smell, caries andeven abscess formation around the tooth involved.
After operculectomy is done, you will be able to maintain your oral hygiene properly.
Your dentist will perform this procedure under local anesthesia; gum tissue is removed by giving a sharp incision with a dental instrument and removed.
Sutures if needed are placed, or can be left after excision (cut of gum tissue) to heal by itself.
Likewise the dentist can also use laser as it has minimal bleeding, pain and good healing.
