Dental Avulsion
Dental Avulsion is a real dental emergency in which the tooth gets dislodged from the socket. In most instances, it occurs because of the injuries. It can also occur in any part of the body but common in only a few locations. The very early management of the avulsed tooth affects the prognosis of the tooth.
What happens when the tooth gets knocked out?
Normally, the tooth is connected to its bone surrounding it by a ligament known as “periodontal ligament.” The tooth receives its nourishment through this periodontal ligament. When the tooth is injured and is knocked out, the ligament is stretched, broken leading to the complete displacement of the tooth out of the socket. In this process, half of the ligament stays in the tooth root and another half in the tooth socket. It results in loss of nourishment to the tooth leading to the dead tooth or dead tissue.
How is it treated?
If the tooth is avulsed, it is quite very important to take that tooth to your dentist within half an hour of avulsion. Your dentist will observe the condition of the tooth and tell you the correct treatment plan. Additionally, don’t forget that the re-implantation can be only done by your dentist and for various reasons; it is difficult for a person who is not professional. So remember, do not try to re-implant the tooth by yourself. Just go to the dentist immediately and safeguard your teeth. But, at the same time, it is also very useful for you to understand how you should take that tooth to your dentist and how immediately. Let’s discuss it in detail now!
Before reaching your dental office:
If the tooth is avulsed, don’t panic. Also, do not let the patient eat or drink anything. Then clean the avulsed tooth with saline water without damaging the surface of the tooth which may contain living periodontal tissues. Next, put in the storage medium such as milk, or saliva where milk is considered as the most effective and recommended medium taking cost-effectiveness, ease of availability, and cell viability into consideration. Try to reach your dentist as soon as possible where the optimum time to re-implant the avulsed tooth is considered to be before one hour of accident for the best prognosis.
After reaching the dental office:
Immediately after reaching the dental office, your dentist checks the condition of the avulsed tooth, tooth socket, and then tell you what needs to be done. If it is manageable, your dentist will re-implant the tooth and does the splinting procedure (connecting two adjacent teeth with the avulsed tooth). Then your dentist asks you to retain the splinting for the next two to three weeks and then does the root canal treatment if required after two weeks.
